Aston Gastro Bar @ CDC on BumREs.com
The Aston is a European restaurant nestled within the modern outdoor shopping avenue, the CDC or Crystal Design Center- Phase 2. Among the multitude of lifestyle, stylish apparel, and furniture stores, several upscale restaurants of different nationalities are scattered throughout the designer’s paradise, attracting everyone to rest from shopping and enjoy a nice meal while people-watching. I have found myself hanging out at CDC every so often. On this visit, my friend bought a deal for the Aston Gastro Bar and invited me to join, I couldn’t deny the deal. So here I am, reviewing the Aston Gastro Bar @ CDC on Praditmanutham road, Bangkok.
The actual location of Aston restaurant is away from the central area where people are wandering. On the 2nd floor and at the furthest end of the Phase 2 (near the back parking lot), the restaurant is far from being a strategic spot. If there weren’t any signage to direct people from the ground floor, not many people would even notice that the restaurant is there, especially when the place only opens for dinner. Personally, I don’t remember myself strolling near the Aston or even to go up on the 2nd floor of the CDC at all. The name has the emphasis, Gastro Bar, defining that this is a bar for the stomach. I have seen another restaurant with the same last name, the Hyde & Seek but I still haven’t had the chance to check it out. I remember that the addition to the name has an intention but I can’t remember. When I find more story behind the name, I will make sure to tell you all about it.
We ordered a lot of food. Some were more delicious and others were less delicious, but we enjoyed every single one of them. My most favorite dish was the Foie Gras Supreme (560 Baht). The creation was three stacking beauties; Foie gras, Tuna, and Scallop. The layers of all were meant to be enjoyed together; I was speechless with the first bite – it was extraordinarily delicious. Next best dish was the Sous Vide Pork Breast (360 Baht). Menu said breast but the server said belly; it turned out to be belly. This one was also superb. I personally like the pork belly already so I didn’t have any problem. One dish that we missed was the Salmon Two Ways, a top choice in the recommendation list. Too bad the Aston didn’t have enough to please us. I guess I will have to go back for the Salmon Two Ways, just to find out what is so good about it.
The bill totaled to 1,200 Baht a piece, equivalent to a full course set of many upscale restaurants. Overall, I was so fond of the food at Aston. Besides being so tasteful, every dish also had a unique character. One suggestion is the serving quantity; small portion was a tease, please give me more food. Oh wow – that rhymes too, lol… Servers were knowledgeable of the food and took good care of our table. I must say that this restaurant has qualities found in restaurants of Five Star hotels. Hey, next time you go to CDC – don’t miss a great spot – treat your stomach at the Aston Gastro Bar.
