Gyu Maru Japanese Yakiniku on BumRes.com
One of fine restaurants in the court of Japanese villa, Gyu Maru (round beef?) is a yakiniku that I have heard its greatness for a while. This joint is seen in many reviews on the internet. My friend has recommended me that spot. Finally the time has come – the Gyu Maru is located on the second floor of the court of Japanese villa in Soi Thonglor. The place only opens for dinner. I didn’t reserve a table but I still got a table among the crowded restaurant. Gyu Maru must have something good! For a party of five, we had one grill (standard size). Fortunately, I was with my parents. They couldn’t keep up with me and my brother. If I went with my friends, one grill would be an ordeal.
Gyu Maru has so many choices of food available. Mainly the beef price starts at 170++ baht and pork starts at 130++ baht per serving; pretty high priced. Since there target group is Japanese people and this price doesn’t seem to hurt anyone in this rich neighborhood anyways. On my visit, three tables of Japanese people around our table were guzzling Bee-Ru Singha (beer) like it was free. In the English menu, various cuts of beef were available, mostly named in Japanese. I didn’t know what actual cuts they were, so I had to rely on the knowledgeable server. My most expensive choice was the Super Karubi for 350++ baht, which wasn’t that great. Cheaper cut like Ninniku Harami for 190++ was more delicious, I thought. For other dishes I had, please see photos and captions. Gyu Maru has some serious cuts for 1,000 baht as an option. I didn’t get to try; over the budget for me.
I must say that quality of the beef at Gyu Maru was astonishing. Price is a bit high for average Thai customers. In this meal, it cost 3,410 baht for five people – about 700 baht per person. My girlfriend and I weren’t that full but everyone else was stuffed, they said. In a high class place like this, shouldn’t there be free Green Tea or something? Too bad. Gyu Maru of Thonglor would be a perfect Yakiniku spot for me if I was richer.
