Parkview International Buffet Restaurant on BumRes.com

The review today is on the Parkview of the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel.  This four star hotel is located in the Sukhumvit 22 and this is the official International Buffet restaurant of the Hotel.  Parkview is open for business all day long.  You can go there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even Sunday Brunch (typical meal for a family get together).  Please check on the regular price again.  When I was there, I had the promotion three spots for the price of two.  The total was 2,398 baht.  I believe the restaurant offers this deal on Saturday night.  Be sure to check with them prior to your visit.

Within the line buffet, I didn’t get photos of all the offerings.  I missed the typical dish yourself basic dishes since I didn’t care for too much.  Let’s go over them.

The Sashimi area – not the most exclusive choices of fish but there were Hamachi and Salmon.  These two were good enough for me.  Good quality fish, freshly sliced into small pieces.  Too small – I thought; only about half the size of the ones you find in Japanese restaurant.

Steak area – the gravy was tasty.  I am not sure what cut I had but they were quite tender and juicy.  Served in good size chunk to satisfy my steak cravings.

Foie Gras area – Parkview’s foie gras was not as delicious as I expected.  I was unsure of the preparation method but I had to wait so long in queue to get it.

Chinese food area – I didn’t get the photos of them, so I couldn’t remember what were available; mostly the common choices of stir-fries.  The one that stood out was the Pekking Duck, which was not bad.

Grilling area – Inclusion of seafood, lamb, beef, Ponytail lobster, sausages;  all of them were outstanding.

Within the line buffet, there were Ponytail lobster and Alaskan King Crab legs ready to serve.  But, they were disappointing because they weren’t freshly prepared.  I didn’t like them cold.  Great deal of this buffet was the free flow of Draft beer (Chang Beer).  Three half pint glasses for me and I was good to go.  Multitude choices of dessert would be great for sweet lovers.  Since I am not a dessert fan, I didn’t get my hands dirty at all.  Only took photos for you all to see.

As I have mentioned above, the price was 2,400 for three people on the promotion night.  For 800 baht per person, what we had to choose was a great deal.  I think the promotion has ended already.  Check with the Parkview of Imperial Queen’s Park for current promotion.  Even if it was a 1,000 baht per person, it would still be worth it.  Check it out and let me know how you like it.

Junhom Southern Thai Restaurant - Ramkhamhang 21, Bangkok

Junhom Thai Restaurant - Southern Thai Dishes - Ramkhamhang 21 (Soi Nawasri) below Ramintra-Artnarong Expressway, Bangkok

JunHom Southern Thai Restaurant - Bangkok on BumRes.com

Today the review is on the Southern Thai Food restaurant – the Junhom at Soi Ramkhamhang 21 (Soi Nawasri).  This down to earth restaurant has been around for at least a decade.  I remember going there about ten years ago.  Recently I have been driving past the place so often.  The store front seemed unattractive with the messy decoration on the terrace.  I knew I had to try it out again for a review because their food wasn’t bad at all as I remembered.  Finally the time had come.  Entering the Junhom Southern Thai Food restaurant, the feel was a bit different from the front.  The place was more spacious than it appeared from the outside.  Seating is available both indoor and outdoor; everyone is sitting inside with the air conditioning.

Menu of the Junhom consists of authentic southern Thai dishes.  Majority of customers are Thai and I am sure they love the vast selection.  Average price is around 80 – 120 baht; nice and cheap.  Single serving dishes are around 40 – 60 baht; best for a quickie meal.  Let’s talk about my meal.

First one was the Kang Pa Neau or Beef Curry Soup for 120 baht.  Its spiciness was showing through the appearance.  With its yellow color broth, I could tell that it will be nice and intense.  As I tasted the curry, it actually tasted really good, not too spicy.  The large portion was as enjoyable as the perfectly spiced flavor.

Sator Moo Pad Prik or Stir-fried Pork and Stink beans (Sator) with chili paste.  This traditional southern Thai menu can only be found in the South.  The strong flavor wasn't a problem today since it was a dinner.  I wouldn’t recommend this menu for breakfast.  Your breath will stink for the rest of the day, no joke – lol…  This is a must try menu.  I loved it so much; the pork belly was tasty with the spicy sauce and the beans.

Crab Fried Rice (60 baht) was the substitute for the white rice tonight.  Unlike the first two, this fried rice was less impressive.  In my opinion, fried rice is a menu that can determine the skill of the chef.  If you have read the Iron Chef Comic book, you may understand – on one scene, the host was saying that fried rice can speak for the greatness of the chef.

Pla Tod Kamin or Crispy fried fish in turmeric (175 baht), a great southern menu that is hard to find at normal Thai restaurant.  The Chanhom made it good to a standard level.  I could really sense the turmeric aroma within the fish, which was nice.

Kungnang Rad Sauce Makam or Shrimp with Tamarind sauce for 400 baht.  When I first saw the serving size, I was so surprised by its big size.  But, I finally understood once I saw the bill.  With its great crispiness, the whole shrimp was edible.  So, please enjoy from head to tail.  The tamarind sauce was the key to deliciousness; slightly tangy and sweet.  What a delightful dish I’d say.

The Junhom’s Southern Thai specialty dishes were definitely enjoyable; good portion, low price, and tasty.  For a total of five dishes, the bill only came to 875 baht (the shrimp menu was half of the bill).  If you have never tried Southern Thai dishes, Junhom Southern Thai is a great start.  Commuting by car is most convenient; parking is available in the empty lot opposite to the restaurant.  You can access from the Ramintra – Artnarong Expressway.  It is the Soi after the Petronas Gas Station after the Pracha-Uthit intersection, heading toward Rama IX Road.  In the Soi Nawasri, the Junhom is located on the right hand side after you pass a small four-way intersection.  Check it out!

Luk Kai Thong (Golden Chick) Chinese Restaurant - Thonglor, Bangkok

Luk Kai Thong (Golden Chick) Thai - Chinese Restaurant Thonglor

Luk Kai Thong Thai Chinese Food Thonglor on BuMRes.com

The Luk Kai Thong restaurant – with such a Thai name, I thought it was a traditional Thai restaurant.  Supposedly the food of Luk Kai Thong is half bred; Thai and Chinese.  In Thai, Luk Kai Thong means a baby golden chick and only Kai Thong refers to golden chicken.  The Mae Kai Thong (Mother of the golden chick) is located at Muang Thong Thani.  And for the one I am reviewing today is the Luk Kai Thong, which is at Thonglor 13 – the Soi of cool restaurants.  By naming this one ‘Luk’ Kai Thong – must be because of its size.  The place has only ten tables with full on decoration and cozy atmosphere.

About the food of Luk Kai Thong, I am not sure what nationality it is exactly – like I said, it appeared to half bred of Thai and Chinese cuisine.  If any of you can tell me its actual nationality, please let me know.  Details of the menu can be found in the tab menu.  Today I mostly order from the recommendation menu and one other small appetizer.

First one to come was the Luk Shin Sethee Luak (Millionaire meatballs) for 120 baht.  It was six huge fish balls served on Chinese celery.  It was an enjoyable yet simple dish – texture was nice and soft.

Bamee with roasted duck (egg noodles) for 180 baht – not in the recommended section but I ended up liking this menu the most.  Its flavor was well in harmony; soft egg noodles, tender duck breast, slightly salty.  All aspects of this noodle dish were spectacular.  I wish I had a bowl of it right at the second.

Kao Yok Ron + Rice bun (350 baht) – it looked a lot like any braised pork belly in Chinese restaurants.  This one was suggested by the restaurant, tasted alright with its flavor leaning toward sweetness.  You may not like it if you don’t like sweet.  Though you have the bland flavored rice bun to contrast with the meat; they were meant to be together.

Moo Neang Pla Kem (250 baht), Steam pork with salted fish – another recommended menu.  Surprisingly, I didn’t like it at all.  Its saltiness was way too pronounced but my father ended up liking this menu.  A classic example of personal preference.

The Luk Kai Thong didn’t add service charge or vat, so everything in the menu may be priced higher already.  For four dishes, the bill totaled to about 1,000 baht.  My experience at the Luk Kai Thong @ Thonglor was average – I didn’t sense anything special about the food.  But, it is a good restaurant.  If you look for rare dishes, a mix of Thai and Chinese, Luk Kai Thong is the spot for you.

Chinese House - Chinese Restaurant on BumRes.com

The China House is a Chinese Restaurant in the Soi Aree.  I happened to go there and captured some images of their food and the place a while ago but forgot to review.  I am writing a short review just to get the quick flavors across to you.  This Chinese restaurant is located in the midst of the Soi Aree (between Phaholyothin and RAMA VI).  Actual setting was more like a residential, with contemporary Chinese elements.  Customer service was acceptable, better than average Chinese places.

Available food selection of the China House @ Soi Aree includes Dim Sum as well as gourmet Chinese specialties.  It was a satisfying experience but I can't remember the specific details of the food.  Overall, it was an enjoyably and delicious lunch.

I am going to end this brief review.  For any of you who has gone to the Chinese House @ Soi Aree, please kindly share your experience with everyone.
