Il Tartufo - Italian Restaurant on BumRes.com

Il Tartufo in Italian means the Truffle.  The Il Tartufo is an Italian restaurant located in the Sukhumvit 49 road, a street that is accessible from many ways.  Going to this place, I took the Soi Thonglor 13 and sneaked my way around a bit.  The residential set up restaurant was split into three main sitting area; two of them were indoor and the other is an open air seating.  There was nobody in there when I went for lunch at around 2pm.  Table by the window seemed to be a good spot for me, so that was my choice.  Looked like where I sat was popular; a group of expats also chose to sit near my table.  This restaurant can probably hold about 40-50 people.  Parking is limited; only about five spots available.  I won't risk driving here, if I was to come for dinner.

There are not too many dishes to choose from.  Comparing to most Italian restaurant of this grade, average price of Il Tartufo is considered reasonable, which ranges between 250-700 baht.  I was with one friend and we were able to order the lunch set for 450++ baht.  In the set, soup and dessert were fixed.  We could only choose the appetizer and the main dish.  First menu was the Warm Beef Capaccio with rocket and Parmesan.  The appearance of this menu was simple and appetizing.  Thin and wavy slice of the beef was calling my name.  In this menu, we got our protein, protein, and fiber: meat, cheese and vegetable respectively.  We enjoyed them one bite at a time and the plate was empty shortly.  Second appetizer was the Rocket Salad with crispy bacon and mushroom.  Its large portion didn't make up the weird taste.  I didn't  quite like it.  Next up was the chef's choice soup.  I didn't quite get the name from the server.  It was good for not knowing what it was.  The intense flavor was yummy.  Main dish of our choice; firstly was the Pork wrapped in bacon with mustard sauce served with mashed potatoes and spinach.  Saltiness was the prominent flavor, which I didn't like.  With the sides being cold and bland, this dish was close to being unacceptable.

Our second main dish was the grilled Sea Bass.  The fish was alright; nothing special.  Side dish was exactly like the first main dish, cold and bland - what is up with this? After both main dishes, I felt unsatisfied so I wanted to give this the Il Tartufo another chance to make a come back.  I noticed an interesting Daily Special of Il Tartufo - the Braised Veal Shank Milanese served with Saffron Risotto (590 baht).  First sight of this menu was kind of disappointing; I thought to myself - Deep fried battered beef - oh well, the portion was large!  Then once I tried, all I could say was "not delicious".  The feel was like a Tonkatsu but the gravy made the batter all soft and mushy.  A second chance turned out to be another disappointing dish.  After all the main dishes, Carrot cake came to our table.  I gave up after two bites.

Total damage of this late lunch at Il Tartufo was 1,824 Baht included vat + service charge as a typical restaurants of Thonglor.  Market brand bottled water was 30 baht, pricey! Servers didn't impress me with their service neither; they seemed to be goofy and inattentive.  We were out of water to drink for a while; nobody came to check on us at all.  Though, timing for serving each course was perfect.  They still need to improve on the food.  Honestly, it could be my preference - don't get me wrong.  I just didn't like the food at Il Tartufo.  To my surprise, the Il Tartufo @ Sukhumvit 49 received 9/10 points from the Thailand's Best Restaurant.  If you disagree with me, please kindly share your experience.
