Benjarong - Thai Restaurant on BuMRes.com

The review is on a fine Thai restaurant in an upscale restaurant of Silom area, Bangkok – Benjarong at Dusit Thani Hotel.  This restaurant has been around from the first day of the hotel.  Up to this year, Benjarong has exactly 40 years of experience.  They had a promotion to celebrate their 40th anniversary, which was what I got attracted by.  Benjarong is on the ground floor, decorated with the Thai elements and the carved wood concept; immaculate interior setting.  The view of the lush garden and the waterfall added a soothing atmosphere to the elegantly ornate table set up.  Customer service of the Dusit Thani was nothing to be worried about.  This hotel is known for their superb level of service.  Let’s go over the food I had on this visit.

At Benjarong Thai restaurant @ Dusit Thani Hotel, I ordered a total of six dishes.  The price was too expensive; most of them cost around 200-300 baht.

Pineapple fried rice (320++) – the large portion of rice served in the pineapple.  Presentation was astonishing but the taste was just too ordinary.  It actually tasted so weird that I didn’t like it.

Pad Pak Waan (260++) – Simple stir-fried local vegetable was so delicious.  In Thai, Pak Waan literally means sweet veggies.  Together with the ground shrimp and the savory sauce, it was the best dish of the meal to enjoy with the premium grade Jasmine rice.

Tom Yum Goong (240++) – Many of you may know this famous Thai soup already.  Balance of spicy and sour is the charm of the soup.  I expected to find the best representation of the world’s famous soup at Dusit Thani but I actually didn’t get that excited with it.  The taste didn’t reach the greatness I looked forward to.  And the portion was small; we could only split into two small bowls.

Bua Loy Benjarong (95++) and Sweet Banana (90++), both were the traditional Thai desserts that I haven’t had in a while.  They weren’t anything exciting, so basic – not different from the ones I could find in food stalls.

The promotion was buy one get one free (same or less value).  For this meal, the regular price would be 1,300 baht.  With the discount, my lunch at Benjarong was 830 baht.  Personally, Thai dishes at Benjarong were tuned down to suit palates of non- Thai people.  For me, I wasn’t that impressed with the taste of the food.  I assumed that the adaptation was necessary for their target group of customers.  I love all other aspects about Benjarong Thai restaurant at Dusit Thani except the food.  However, don’t get me wrong – their ingredients showed great quality but I just liked the more intense and authentic flavors.  Please share with me if you have been to Benjarong.  I want to know which menu you like and dislike.

  1. Nuts in the pineapple is highly a new concept which i have seen. Thai food is always sticky and the Thai desert is very testy.
